Born in Kruiningen, the Netherlands, where he trained as a carpenter. In 1890 he emigrated to the ZAR.
He practiced in Pretoria as a contractor, building, amongst others the residences of the Director and Deputy Director of the Veterinary Research Institute, Onderstepoort, the old Pioneers River Bridge, and the Gereformeerde Kerk, Matlabas.
