Désirée Picton-Seymour was born and grew up in England. She moved to South Africa and attended the Michaelis School of Fine Art. She published two books of her drawings in the 1950s Western Provincial and Transvaal Republican. She published several books on architecture in South Africa. 1977; Victorian Buildings of South Africa, 1989; Historical Buildings in South Africa. She was very involved with the conservation of the South African built environment and served on the National Monuments Council, was a trustee of the Heritage Committee of the Western Cape and served on the Heritage Committee of the Cape Institute of Architects. She was awarded the Cape Times Medal for Conservation in 1983. She, together with her husband, Michael Duckham, and daughter, Nicolette, bought and restored the homestead Zorgvliet, at 3 Sir George Grey Street, Oranjezicht, Cape Town.
