Was born in Forres, Morayshire in Scotland. It is uncertain when he came to South Africa but he married in Riversdale, Cape (date unknown.) By 1915/1916 he was listed as a member of the Transvaal Institute of Architects living in Johannesburg where he appears to have remained for the rest of his career. In 1925 he was elected a Licentiate member of the RIBA, his papers give no details concerning his training nor his career. In 1925 he was appointed Honorary Auditor of the South African Society of Artists and became a member of the Institute of South African Architects in 1927. Forrest executed a number of buildings in Johannesburg among them Harley Chambers in Jeppe Street (1926-1927).
