Born and educated in Grahamstown, then moved to Port Elizabeth where he became partner in the largest engineering firm there AC STEWART. From 1894-1904 he served as engineer and director of Consolidated Gold Mines on the Witwatersrand. After retiring he became director of the Addo Land and Immigration Company (1908-1912). As conservationist he inaugurated a tree-planting scheme to save the Algoa Bay dunes. In 1871 he married Louisa Mary Carlisle by whom he had three sons and two daughters.
