Born in Cork, Ireland, the son of Robert and Rebecca Scott Day, he was educated in Cork and at Queen's College, Dublin from which he graduated in 1877 with a B.E. (Batchelor of Engineering) degree in 1877. He studied architecture in the office of Sir Thomas Drew in Dublin for two years before leaving for London in 1879. Here he remained several years before leaving for South Africa. He settled in Kimberley in about 1885 and founded a practice which continues to exist under the style of Goldblatt, Yuill & Partners. In about 1890 he left for Johannesburg 'after disposing of his practice to DW GREATBATCH' (Yuill 1984:54), shortly afterwards moving to Canada and settling in Victoria, British Columbia in 1891. Here he worked briefly as an architect before turning to a career in real estate. He became a prominent citizen, and president of the Victoria Branch of the Archaeological Institute of America. He married in South Africa in 1888.
