MAAA has received widespread acclaim in South Africa and increasingly
internationally, reflecting Pieter MATHEWS' holistic approach to design, which embraces unconventional use of texture and sculptural form. In particular, Mathews has a unique ability to communicate design concepts to the broader public.
MAAA began as a practice specialising mainly in the residential market but has since redirected its prime focus away from this market segment, towards transport architecture, hospitality projects and non-standard commercial projects.
Recognition for MAAA is reflected in numerous awards, which include:
In 2009, MAAA won two of the four station types for the new Tshwane
(Pretoria) Bus Rapid Transport network in a national competition. 18 of
South Africa’s best practices had been invited to participate. Currently
MAAA has been commissioned by the South African National Roads Agency
(SANRAL) to develop a new bridge design on the N1 National Freeway, destined
to be a gateway to the new Gauteng Freeway Improvement plan.
Published and publishing
MAAA's designs are widely published both locally and abroad in more than 100 editorial publications to date. International publications include: Greek 'Marie Claire'; French 'Maison'; British 'Grand Designs Magazine' and the Chinese 'World Architecture Highlights'.
