WARD, Herbert GordonBorn: 1953
Was awarded the BAKER Scholarship for 1925 with his design for 'A propylaeum or monumental entrance built as a War Memorial for the passage of people on foot only, through a great retaining wall about twenty-five feet high on the face of a cliff surrounding a town on a kopje' (SAAR Jun 1925:34); the subject matter was set by Herbert Baker. Ward joined the PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT in Pretoria in 1929 and became a senior architectural assistant in 1936.
