STIDWORTHY, Joseph EdgecombeBorn: 1789
Was born in Totnes, Devon and was by 1823 living in Cape Town, working as an architect and builder. By 1833 he was described as a mason and an ornamental plasterer. In December 1841 he bought items at the auction of the Estate of H SCHUTTE's effects; in 1846 he was recorded as an architect, mason and plasterer. A watercolour by J Poortermans in the Africana Museum in Johannesburg shows a large building of Stidworthy's in Edgecombe Terrace, Sir Lowry Rd. The watercolour is dated 1847 and Radford suggests that the terrace was built by Stidworthy around 1840.
