Reg No: 572

ARIBA 1929

Was the son of the architect Donald MacGILLIVRAY. In about 1929 he worked in the Architectural Department of the Bechuanaland, Matabeleland and Rhodesian (Zimbabwean) Railways before leaving for Cape Town in 1922. Here he spent six months in the office of MacGILLIVRAY & GRANT before he left to study architecture at the University of Liverpool School of Architecture. In about 1927 he returned to Rhodesia (Zimbabwe) and was admitted into partnership with his father in 1929. After four years of practice as MacGillivray & Son he left Rhodesia (Zimbabwe) in 1934 to work in Port Elizabeth for reasons of health, entering the office of SMITH, SONS & DEWAR, Port Elizabeth. He became a partner in the firm on GO SMITH's retirement in 1936. The practice, restyled MacGILLIVRAY, SMITH, SONS & DEWAR, carried on under MacGillivray and H PULLEN. MacGillivray appears to have left the practice a few years later since in 1939 he was associated with S CHAPMAN on a block of flats in Cape Town (cf. CHAPMAN & MacGILLIVRAY). By 1939-1940 he was listed as an absentee member of the Cape Institute of Architects living in Bulawayo.
